WELCOME

President George Weir welcomed all to the August 24^th meeting of the Brattleboro Rotary Club held at the American Legion in Brattleboro. (ED NOTE: President George had a significant setback on his microphone skills). Cheri Ann Brodhurst offered a meaningful invocation that included the Serenity Prayer by Reinhold Niebuhr (1892-1971).

God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.

Living one day at a time;
enjoying one moment at a time;
accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;
taking, as He did, this sinful world
as it is, not as I would have it;
trusting that He will make all things right
if I surrender to His Will;
that I may be reasonably happy in this life
and supremely happy with Him
forever in the next.
Amen.

This was followed by the pledge of allegiance. Birthday greetings were extended to Joe Little.

As a luncheon of chicken, cubed pork, broccoli, rice with black beans, poultry salad, green salad, julienne zucchiniand cookies for dessert was being digested, the meeting continued.

JOKE OF THE WEEK

For our Rotary joke, George Weir told a version of the following on behalf of Mike Mandracchia:

A sheep farmer is tending his flock when a city slicker rolls up in his BMW, hops out and asks, "Hey, if I tell you exactly how many sheep you have, can I take one?" The farmer nods, so the city slicker opens his laptop, calls up some satellite photos, runs some algorithms, and announces, "You have 1,432 sheep."

Impressed, the farmer says, "You're right. Go ahead and take one." So the city slicker loads one of the animals into the backseat of the car.

"Now," says the farmer, "I'll bet all my sheep against your car that I can tell you what you do for a living."

A gaming sort, the city slicker says, "Sure."

"You're a consultant," says the farmer.

"Wow!" says the consultant. "How'd you know?"

"Well," says the farmer, "you come from nowhere even though I never asked you to. You drive a flash car, and waer a smart suit. You told me something I already knew. And you don't know anything about my business. Now give me back my dog."

For a Rotary song, Bill McKim led us in a rousing rendition of Mairzy Doats.

ROTARY MINUTE

For our Rotary minute, Martin Cohn gave a very brief report on his recent successful trip to Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Highlights included meetings with residents who will handle distribution of quilting materials, members of three South Dakota Rotary clubs which will work with our club, and a member of a Switzerland Rotary club also interested working on the project.

Martin presented a banner from the Mount Rushmore Rotary club.

He also showed us a handmade prayer stick that was given to both him and Sunrise Rotarian Tristam Johnson. A thought is find a way to turn this stick into money to buy a car for a needy Pine Ridge resident.

At our August 31^st meeting, Rick Manson will tell a joke or lead us in song, while John Meyer delivers a Rotary Minute.
