President Jeff Hagstrom welcomed all to the July 7th meeting of the Brattleboro Rotary Club held at the American Legion in Brattleboro, the first one of the new Rotary year. Roger Allbee offered a meaningful invocation in which he quoted the late Elie Wiesel: “We must take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented. Sometimes we must interfere. When human lives are endangered, when human dignity is in jeopardy, national borders and sensitivities become irrelevant. Wherever men and women are persecuted because of their race, religion, or political views, that place must - at that moment - become the center of the universe.”. This was followed by the pledge of allegiance.
As a luncheon of BBQ chicken, mac&cheese, chick peas, vegetables, salad and brownies for dessert was being digested, the meeting continued.
Guests: Three of the six recipients of this year’s Rotary scholarships: Erelyn Griffin (Johnson State), Ashley Hescock (Franklin Pierce) and Benjamin Whitcock (Castleton). NOTE: all three graduated from Leland & Gray.

For our Rotary Minute, Ana Saavedra talked about a community project featured in this month’s Rotarian. The Jackson Hole Rotary Club completed a 9-year project to restore the antler archways in the town square. To learn more, click here.
