President Greg Worden welcomed a smaller crowd to the April 14th meeting of the Brattleboro Rotary Club held at the American Legion in Brattleboro. Marty Cohnoffered a meaningful invocation.This was followed by the pledge of allegiance.Birthday greetings were extended to Rich Carroll and John Mabie.
As a luncheon of salad, roast beef, gravy, rice, green beans, chick peas and housemade cookies for dessert was being digested, the meeting continued.

For our Rotary joke, George Weir told a version of the following:
A man inherits an old piano, which desperately needed to be tuned. So he asked around, and was told that Earl Opporknockity was the best piano tuner in the area. The man called Earl and hired him to tune his piano. Earl had a keen ear and a deft touch, and did a wonderful job tuning the old piano. The piano was restored to its former glory once again, and the man was very pleased. After a year or so the old piano started producing sour notes again. So the man called Earl, and asked him to come work his magic on the old piano again. To the man's surprise, Earl refused, saying "Sorry, I can't accept the job." "Why not?" the man wanted to know. "I'll pay you twice as much as last time if you'll just come tune my piano." "Haven't you heard?" Earl asked, "Opporknockity only tunes once."
ROTARY MINUTE

The state bird is the hermit thrush (Catharus guttatus). This was adopted in 1941. The bird was only designated after debate in the legislature; though the hermit thrush is found in all of 14 counties and has a distinctive sweet call, it leaves the state during the winter for its yearly southward migration..
